My guess would be Clarksville.

It may be Clarksville, unless maybe there is an obscure neighborhood somewhere that can top it:

I was thinking that since people do live there, the UT Campus might be Austin's "oldest neighborhood"... but it was 1883, and Clarksville claims to be started in 1871.

Here is a link to a great old map of Austin in 1887..

From the look of that map, Clarksville was definitely developed as well as some of east Austin (note the schools listed below).

Check out the giant compound to the north of the university.

The Kealing neighborhood in East Austin was settled by blacks in the post Civil War era. And the area around St. Edward's (founded in 1878) was settle in the 1870's as well.

Hyde Park was the first subdivision in Austin. Out in the sticks back in the day.

yes, Hyde Park is post-WWI

Austin was founded in 1839, there are still from buildings from that period scattered throughout downtown. There were also grand, amazing mansions built in what we think of as downtown in the 1870s.

Swede Hill is the area around the French Legation (which was built before statehood), there are still original houses there but fast disappearing.

I have some research to do in the Austin History Center in January, I'll ask about it then.

I wish the city would save the old houses? Is there a historical district or association in Austin ?
