A friend of mine is considering a move to Austin, he will be visiting in April to talk to a couple potential employers. He lives in NYC right now.

He has a nice Pro/Con list and one of the cons is the lack of fresh fish markets. He is a pescatarian and eats a lot of fish. Online the only thing that really comes up is Quality Seafood on Airport Rd I think. Is that the best place? Are there others?

Personally, I think Central Market (either location) has a better selection and moves more product than Quality Seafood.

There is HMart as well but that place always has a "smell" that turns me off.

Fiesta Market mid city on IH 35 has actual live fish in tanks.

Also, once things return to normal the Lakeline Mall farmer's market will reopen on Saturday mornings. There's a guy who comes from Palacios Texas on the coast with fresh fish. You have to get there early - he sells out quickly.

Quality seafood supplies a lot of restaurants so they always have a good selection of fresh fish. Central Market also but I’ve found them to be the most expensive. Whole Foods has some decent offerings and not as pricey as CM. HEB occasionally has some good items - best to get to know the local fish counter person that can advise what’s fresh or what came in frozen that they still have frozen on hand (if you want to buy ahead).

We try to eat fish at least 2X a week and we are very picky about eating wild caught sustainable fish. It requires a little effort but it can be done.

We also drive to the coast a few times a year and stock up on local catches.

he will never get as fresh fish as he gets from a coastal city. Houston gets fresh fish.

Im not sure what you are saying. Austin is not closer to any other seafood source than the gulf and houston is closer to the gulf than austin. NYC is also closer to a "sea" and will have fresher seafood.

If you are looking for the freshest fish, you wont be getting it in austin. By fresh I mean fresh, never frozen. I simply dont see how the point is arguable. NYC and houston will have much fresher seafood of any kind (excepting limited types of seafood that is kept alive in aquariums). I galveston I can go to the pier and get oysters off the boat. In newport beach california, I can get crabs that were caught that same morning.
