Hey all - it seems I will be moving to Far West this fall with my Aussie.

We will be just behind the HEB (on the south side of the BLVD), west of Mo-PAC (Oak Ridge Apartments)

it seems there is an official dog park on the east side of Mo-Pac, but is there any place in the are to let my dog catch a frisbee, or run around that does not require crossing over MoPac? Something that would be close enough for daily trips?

Is there a cool place in the area for weekend / occasional trips with the dog?

Thanks.
As some of you know, me, my better half, and our Aussie are moving to Austin from Philly - so I am not very familiar with the city, or the area.

Igor

Bull Creek is good for dogs, but can get crowded. The green belt is also good. Pease Park has (or at least had) a leash free area.

For around FW, I would check out the Murchison/Doss school yards. I don't think they are completely fenced, but close, and probably not too crowded on the weekend. Those schools are right west of the HEB, a block or so.

They are very crowded on the weekend, lots of kids and families, and no dogs off leashes. I think the closest off leash park is on Lamar and 24th- the park/trail there.

Bull Creek park has an off-leash area -- it's a really neat park, too. Water, huge boulders, and you can get to it without any highways.

Park Profile: Bull Creek District Park

Also Allen Park is a neat little neighborhood park

No dog off leash area, but it's even closer to you and is almost always empty.

Hurray for Aussies! I have a Mini Aussie and a Mini Aussie mix. Great dogs. I also head up the Greater San Diego Australian Shepherd Meetup. Maybe if I move I can start one in Austin too!

Bull creek is my favorite, but crossing over mopac shouldnt be a big deal. If you look at the satellite view of far west you will see that there is some kind of structure coming off the end of it after it crosses over mopac. That is a walking bridge that goes directly into the dog park.

Going to bull creek you would take far west straight west and then have to navigate a few neighborhood streets.

Is bull creek fenced? It doesn't look like it. I don't quite trust one of my dogs- she doesn't listen very well.

It isnt fenced, but it is surrounded by pretty dense trees so the dogs tend to stay in the area with all the other dogs.

I use rotisserie chicken for recall training. Do that for a little bit and your dog will not leave your side.

Good idea. Here at our Dog parent you are forbidden to take food in. So, it makes it real difficult to do training. I do take snacks to the beach, but rotisserie chicken sounds like a fab idea.

I think we will go check out the park when we are then in a week (OMG so soon, can't wait).
