I'm amazed at how many people in Austin respond to endless requests for information from potential new neighbors. You all are a gracious bunch! I've searched previous posts to address my own questions in an effort to give you guys a break, but I haven't found anything. If it's not too much trouble, could you please give one more person moving to Austin some neighborhood advice?

About me:
-- a "young" 36 yr old single prof. (J.D.) female who likes to socialize, i.e. drink beer w/ friends, BBQ, boat, head downtown (but not every weekend)
-- moving w/ 19-yr-old son who likes music scene, is not in college
-- will work in RR or Parmer East

Open to rent or buy (must have pool) ~$1400/mo or $150k~

What is a good neighborhood, community, complex, etc. for both myself and my son to meet people and make friends? I'm more concerned about him meeting people since he is not in school, but don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of teen-agers. Not crazy about apartments, but ...

His taste would be campus area; I prefer Arboretum, Tarrytown, Barton Creek type areas. Is there someplace we would both be happy?

Wow...on your budget, you might have a problem finding something in the areas that you are mentioning. You will probably be most successful with finding a 2 bedroom condo in Central Austin (like Allandale or Far West) or the Arboretum area, if you want to stay in Austin proper....but based on where you are going to work, you'll buy/rent more space if you stay in Round Rock, Cedar Park, or Far North Austin. You should hire a rental realtor or an agency to help you as they will know more about the particular condos/complexes.

Plenty of new apartments off Palmer Lane would be perfect. I too looking to sell my home here very shortly and looking @ apartments off Palmer North area to be exact.

Palmer Lane is pretty popular these days. Lots of cyclist ride along it daily and there are plenty of grocery stores and access to 620, I35 and mopac for North to South access.

Let's see... when I was living in Austin I lived at 78751, an area called Hyde Park. There are many nice houses, and also many apartment complexes which you can search for, and try to find something that fits your needs. I would recommend the campus area because there is not much traffic and easy public transportation to almost everywhere in town; this might be useful now and then. You also have many conveniences, like grocery stores and pharmacies, very close to you. It is a fairly safe area as well. Hope this helps!

If socializing is a priority I'd look close to the Arboretum and Domain. Lots of restaurants and bars there.
