HAHA! When I lived in Austin, I remember my father coming down to visit me, and he basically said the same thing...but using a not so PC word for it
I too loved the laid-back vibe of Austin...though when I left (gosh, 7 years ago now) it seemed the area was changing a bit...trying to become more cosmopolitan or something...which is a shame...because Austin was great just the way it was. I miss it

Well, I guess I will chime in as well. I moved from Texas in 2nd grade but over the past year have been back for 2 weeks. In my 2 weeks, I decided I did not like Dallas or Houston.

Dallas had awful traffic and was just to "hoity toity'. Hah, I know I did not spell that right. It was way to metropolitan for me. However, that does not mean it is not a good city for those who like metropolitan type of living.

Houston was ugly as sin. Concrete jungle and the Los Angeles of Texas is what we called it. It felt dirty. It was humid as heck. I did not like it. However, Kingwood which is by IAH airport was one of the most amazing small towns I have ever been to. The city was built into a forest basically. Absolutely stunning.

Fort Worth was a pleasant surprise. I liked it here a lot. It felt like a more laid back, small community with large city amenities. You still had all the major sports and shopping close, but didn't have the congestion as bad as Dallas. Keller/Grapevine/South Lake are all absolutely amazing. We LOVED that area. It is a little more expensive than Fort Worth, but very nice.

Now on to Austin. This is the city the captivated us. Beautiful terrain, great vibe in the city, wonderful suburbs. We just fell in love. For our needs, it is what we wanted.

Each city, except maybe Houston, has its merit and COULD be the city for you depending on your needs and wants. I highly suggest taking a trip out there and looking around for yourself.

Houston has it's merits, and even though I don't live there anymore, I still have a soft spot for it.

Default Houston Vs Dallas

I have family in Houston and go there often, however I live in Dallas. Every time I go to Houston I wonder who in the world laid that city out!!! Absolutly NO zoneing makes for an ugly site. Driving down the highway for about a mile, you will see everything from million dollar homes, trash dumps, factories, and middle class houses. It just blows me away that no one thought to segregate everything into more appropriate areas. In my opinon, this is the biggest negative for Houston. Downtown Houston is supprisingly clean, take hurricane Ike away, and actually quite nice. Houston is very humid though, and can be a bit annoying, but such is the case along the gulf cost.

I like Dallas personally. It is not much of a tourist town at all, only those who live there will have a good time. As all Dallasites know, the actual city does not have too much to offer, however the burbs around Dallas provide all the nightlife. The women in Dallas are unmatched. One of the few cities the mothers look better than their college aged daughters, unreal. Traffic can be bad as in any city, but the drivers are usually friendly, as in most will let you in when need be. Main grip for me is all the freakin toll roads, you can't move without having to pay someone. Not that gas isn't already high enough as it is. Then you have all the cameras taking pictures and sending you tickets for offenses that you didn't commit, my latest one, turning right on red. Dallas is a great place to live, jobs are everywhere as the economy booms. I have noticed a lot of people are moving here from up north. Sun shines a lot, but it doesn't rain, and we are always on water restrictions. So only back yard watering pre-6pm!!!!

Wait, what? What burbs are you talking about that provide all this awesome nightlife? The only one I could maybe agree with is Addison. Pretty much all nightlife (i.e. bars and nightclubs not Hooter's and TGI Friday's late night bar specials) in the metro excluding Fort Worth is in Dallas. Uptown, Know-Henderson, Greeneville, Oak Lawn, the Cedars. Am I wrong on this? I live in Arlington which is a vast vacancy of fun nightlife. Just about anyone I know living anywhere in the metro goes to Fort Worth or Dallas for nighttime fun.
