I saw a press release back in August but no news since then about Waymo launching commercial service in Austin. Has anyone seen/heard any updates on this?

My guess is Waymo may have been watching on the sideline as per the potential success/failure/issues of the operation and may have cold feet given the current climate toward autonomous taxis.

Cruise for example is getting alot of negative press and the city council is fundamentally against them which is one thing I will agree with them on.

Cruise ended up suspending its service in Austin due to too many complaints from civilians and first responders, although the GOP overall condones their operations and prohibits the city from making a sweeping mandate for/against their operations. Meanwhile their license was completely revoked in California making them incapable of operating in San Francisco any longer.

Personally when I did Uber's, you almost never noticed they were driverless until something unordinary happened, but when that unordinary thing did happen they were pretty easily fowled up.

The negative publicity always hits harder than the good publicity. There’s no good publicity. It will work safely the vast majority of the time and that’s a regular ride. Or it will be catastrophic and the news media will gobble it up. If it isn’t already safer than human drivers, it will be in the long run.

Phoenix is covered with Waymos right now and they don't seem to be having the issues Cruise is. Just hasn't been any news about Austin in a few months.
