I have a home on the water in a flood zone so wood is definitely OUT. I love the look of a beautifully stained concrete floor and the advantage of not having grout, those places where dirt and grease can hide. It is my flooring of choice!

Great exchange. I am having a custom home built and love real wood but am not so sure with 2 dogs and a baby on the way. I am concerned about resale and will probably sell in a few years. Any experience with real wood and dogs?

Two crazy dogs and oak hardwood floors in last house - sixty year old hardwoods in living and bedroom areas and much more recent oak in the kitchen. I made the only scratches on the floor by dragging a china cabinet around (repeatedly). Madly running Jack Russells left no mark! Concrete more likely to scratch than good hardwood.

My 90lb lab has made scratches in our walnut floors but they are gorgeous. We can refinish them if the scratches get bad.

vote = Stained Concrete

I did my driveway and kitchen and I can't get enough compliments.

the ONLY problem I had with the kitchen was "coldness" but that was only because I had a huge draft coming under one of the doors. fixed that and everything's perfect.

Laminate floors is worse than Popcorn ceilings...lol

Concrete floors are very hard on the body. They have no give. Probably when you are young, you don't notice this. But very hard floors, especially in the kitchen where one is standing, can result in back, knee and foot problems over the long run. I certainly would recommend a gel type mat in the kitchen to help with this. The same can be true of tile. Walking barefoot around a tiled or concrete house is a hazzard to the joints. Better invest in some well cushioned slippers.

Would you mind letting us know why? Is it preference? Is laminate equated with some health hazard? How is it worse that popcorn ceilings?

just be aware engineered wood is not solid wood but layers of wood. The wood you choose for your floor is on top. Much like veneer furniture. I'm not saying it's bad or good...just saying it's different.

True that!

Mine has 3/4 inch of maple on top, so it can be sanded more than once. Ours is 8 years old and in heavy traffic areas (under dining room chairs) it needs to be sanded and refinished already! If I built a house again, I would do the old-fashioned, oak plank, sanded and finished in place, not the pre-finished, engineered stuff! I've lived in houses with 100 year old wood floors that could handle anything.
