Hi all!
I'm heading to Austin next week to look for a 2 or 3 bedroom house for rent. Preferably in South Austin (78704, 78745, etc...). I have 1 small dog and 2 cats (and I'm willing to pay all the xtra $$ for a deposit). I'm looking for something under $1400/month. I was hoping for month-to-month or a six month lease.

Any suggestions for me?

I'm looking on Craigslist, but I wasn't sure when to even start calling to make appointments to look at places. Is 6 days in advance too much time? Is 1 day too little?

Any apartment-hunting agents I should be contacting? What will I need to have to rent an apartment? It's been so long since I've apartment hunted, that I can't remember. Will it be a problem that I don't have a job yet? Will it help if I pay several months rent in advance?

Thanks!

Oh, just one more thing (to quote Columbo, heh): Any apartment suggestions would be welcome too (in case I can't get a house). Pet friendly. I read somewhere that some of them have dog parks?

I can offer this much:

Last month a house went up for rent in my neighborhood in "upper" 78745.
It is about 1500 sft, 4 bdrms, looked to be in good condition and there was a sign that simply said FOR RENT: $1,250. The sign was only up for 3-4 days...

You should use Austinhomesearch.com Home Page (http://www.austinhomesearch.com/Static/homeset.aspx - broken link) and search Lease Property by zip code and price. There are plenty in your price range.

Thanks for the info, guys! I'm wondering if it will be impossible to find a house for less than a year's lease.

Hi Readymade. We wanted a 6 month lease - we ended up finding a house that was listed as a year lease and talked to the landlord. We pay more a month than they had originally listed it for but they agreed to a 6 month lease.

It's worth a shot if you are having a hard time finding a shorter lease.

Good luck!

That's a great idea! Thanks, I'll try that. Someone told me it's a tough time getting a 6 month lease because that would mean the lease would be up in February. And it's hard finding renters in Feb.
