So, I was trying to look up pools in near my new neighborhood (via City of Austin - Parks and Recreation Department: Pool Schedule), and saw that almost all of them are open from June to August.

What's up with that? I thought summer lasted "forever" in Austin. Why would the pools only be open 2-3 months?

I'm in the 78741 area code, and would like to find a pool near me to do laps year round (for exercise). I'd rather not pay a lot. Any suggestions?

The pools are mostly staffed by kids and when they go back to school, they all close, at least the ones I know ,but yes I think its odd as well!
Cheers

The city budget is probably the biggest restriction on the annual pool hours. There are serveral city pools that are open for lap swimming only year 'round (at least for certain hours). I have no idea where 78741 is, is that south? The Dick Nichols pool of Beckett and Davis is open year round and is even heated (slightly) during the colder months. It is a free pool. Not sure on the other city pools....

There are pools that are open year around- Deep Eddy and Barton Springs, I believe.

Yeah but it's ridiculous that even Dick Nichols is now only opening at noon. Nobody is even back in school yet, and it's also the hottest time of the entire year.

Big Stacey is open year around -- lots of lap swimmers all winter there, since it is a small, central pool.

NW District Pool stays open until mid September, weekends only after August. But most wading pools and even some district pools (our favorite, Mabel Davis) closed for the season this weekend.

Remember when school started around August 13th? Some pools would close Aug 1st!
