Hi. I am looking for a barber shop to take my son to. He's mixed, but his hair still leans towards the coarser side. Is there a place that will work on coarse hair on kids? It doesn't have to be a black barber shop or anything. I will take him anywhere as long as they do a good job. Thanks!

My husband had his hair cut by a black man at Wooten Barber Shop and he did a really good job. My husband is not black but I'm sure the barber has had lots of experience cutting black boys'/mens' hair. They're located right on the Drag (Guadalupe) across from UT.

That helps so much. Thanks!

I took my son to Texas Sports cuts. They are open 7 days a week. check out their website www.texassportsccuts.com (broken link). We were new to Austin from Cali and my son was used to one barber in Cali that he's gone to for 10 years and we were pleased.

Don't know where you are located, but there's a new shop in Pflugerville called Delton's Barbershop. Delton apparently moved from a location in Austin that had gotten a bit "rough". My husband and son have both had great haircuts there, and my husband said both times there were varied types of hair waiting for cuts.

THERE ARE NO BLACK HAIR SALONS IN AUSTIN,TX OR THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS. I am from Chicago and there are so many different types of stylist and barbers and I can name 20+ in my neighborhood in Chicago, but not in Austin. I have natural hair and I am African-American, so is my fiance... we are both in our 20's so Im sure one can understand how important it is for us to have our hair right. I have been here for a year and every time I Google African American salons/barbershops in Austin, I get a bunch of BS. My poor baby went to this place called sports clips and this Chinese lady cut his hair and of course it wasn't satisfactory and I just want to announce that if you are African-American and you are used to DOPE hair cuts, unfortunately you are going to have to go to Houston. If you are African-American and you are looking to open a business Austin is a great place to start your journey because there are nt many black owned businesses here and that includes barbershops/nails/hair/lashes! Im sorry if it appears that I am discriminating but when you spend $400+ on buying Brazilian bundles of hair for a crappy full head or partial sew-in, that costs 200$+ you would be upset too. I hope this post helps. Through my quest to find a nice beauty salon and dope barber I have come to the conclusion that there aren't any and people who are black and have been to other cities know darn well what im talking about. Beyonce sure couldnt get her hair done here!! Anyway I guess thats why people here say keep Austin Weird because it is very weird that that there are 20 black people that work at my company of 3000, that I have one black neighbor who happens to work as a maintenance man so that doesnt count and finding a barbershop or salon that fully caters to African-Americans is like finding a needle in a haystack. Austin is not diverse at all!!

Ok, ok, I understand your rant but this isn't true. Yes, Austin doesnt have many salons that cater specifically to black hair, but there are a few. The Hair Clinic on Guadalupe, HCS Salon in Mueller, another place I cant thing of the name right now in North Austin off 183. If you're looking for a black salon experience, these places do it right. If you have natural hair look up JaeUndrea in the Highland Mall area.

What I've noticed here, there are many stylists in Austin that do black hair but arent black or work in salons that are primarily white. The best stylist Ive ever had here in the Austin area was a white woman in an all white salon. Did I care? Nope. I dont care if you're black white blue or green, if you have the skills to do my hair right, I'm happy.

Regarding barbers that cut black hair- there are a ton in East Austin. Most of them dont have websites or a strong internet presence. So you can google them all you want, but you'll never find them. Drive through the east side of town and walk into a few shops and check them out.

Also look outside of Austin- Round Rock, Manor, Elgin have a couple places that do black hair and nails. But you're going to habe to do the work to find a quality stylist. And I really hope you dont discredit someone because of the color of their skin because you may miss out on someone who can do your hair like a celebrity. I hope this info helps others because I truly understand black hair frustration in Austin.

I've lived in the DC area for years. Took a bit but I've found some good barbers. I'd try Kut Klose Barbershop in Pflugerville. I recommend Kenneth if he's available. I also like HD Kutz in Round Rock, 512-784-6675. The previous poster is right. These are small operations that don't have web sites for the most part, although Kut Klose does and HD Kutz allows for online appointments.
The thing with Asian barbers doing black hair is something I'd never seen until I got to Austin. I even tried one but the one I used was baffled by anything beyond a simple fade. Do a search and this issue's been discussed before. I know I posted at least a couple of natural hair salons for black women.

Did anyone else laugh when they saw, "we are both in our 20's so Im sure one can understand how important it is for us to have our hair right."

So much for ending global hunger! Millennials live on...
