"NW" Austin can mean a lot of things to people here.

Depending on how far you're willing to commute, at 183/Braker or 183/Duval, there are lots of nice older homes around the Arboretum (upscale shopping center) and Great Hills areas. I like the neighborhood west of Jollyville Road - which itself is has lots of shopping. And with the new Domain Mall (Mopac/Braker), that entire wedge of neighborhoods has good real estate investment potential as Austin's second downtown is supposed to be built at Burnet/Braker.
