Besides Tarrytown area of Austin, what other good neighborhoods are there in the downtown area for a single, 55 yr old femate that is relocating to the Austin area? I work in the health care field and would rather not commute if there is an area downtown that is suitable and safe to live in . Thank you

There are several. Judges' Hill, Old Enfield, & Pemberton Heights come to mind if your search does not have an upper price limit.

Well Tarrytown is not downtown. If you worked downtown and lived in Tarrytown, you'd need to drive or take a bus. I suppose you could bike. It is close but not walkable close. Just south of downtown, south of the river are some great neighborhoods. Travis Heights, Bouldin, Barton Hills, Zilker. All are fairly pricey to own but there are great rental options (not knowing your price point). And it is quite safe (nothing is perfectly safe after all) but I live in the area and feel very safe and I wouldn't think twice about having my 70 year old mother live alone in any of those areas.

It would be a short drive or bus ride downtown. (5-10 minutes by car, 10-20 minutes by bus).

Clarksville is also downtown, but also pricey.

So is your job downtown for sure? If you don't have a job yet, there are more hospitals/medical offices outside of downtown and in the suburbs than there are downtown.

Rosedale is a wonderful, walkable central Austin neighborhood - price points similar to Tarrytown. It's also the neighborhood closest to Seton Hospital, Medical Pkway, Heart Hospital, etc...

Thank you all for your kind replies. I haven't found a job yet, as I am just starting to post resumes and search, but Seton and Heart hospital and Austin Mental Health Hospital is high on my list, so Rosedale and Clarksville seem to be a good place to start looking and then venture out, depending on my job's location. I will be moving in October. I am thinking of sharing a home or condo for now til I can look around and then will buy in a year. Price range to buy a small condo or townhouse about $150,000. Thank you again

Rosedale and Clarksville aren't all that close to each other if you're thinking walking, FWIW.

If by Austin Mental Health Hospital you mean the Texas State Hospital, Rosedale and Hyde Park are right there. I don't tend to think of that hospital as "downtown", though I guess for someone who hasn't lived here donkeys' years, it probably could be considered as such. There are several condos in that area that you could rent. Renting and getting your feet on the ground is a good idea.

For Seton, most of the area surrounding it is going to be suitable, including the two I mentioned above. To the south of Seton, there are some areas that are pretty pricey, though, out of your range, but there are others that might suit very close by.

There are a few small condo developments off 39 1/2th (Rosedale) in the $150k range and would be within walking distance to Seton, Heart Hospital, and all of the medical offices off Medical Pkwy- most are apt conversions, though, and are older. Seiders Oaks on 39 1/2th is one I'm thinking of. Other than that, you won't find much in the $150k range in the area.
