I'm not clear on this, but I've heard from CAMPO people that the money would go to build new roads. Just where those news roads are is not known. No one on the board has ever responded to my question about where new roads to alleviate traffic would be located. I get the impression their mindset is to put the money in investors' pockets now, worry about average-Joe's commute and quality of life later.

I know I'm in the minority, but love them. Can be a bit mispriced at some points (183A Brushy Creek to 1431 is $1.50?!? That's about $.75 per mile! I avoid that one..), but they save too much time at other places

I hate them. I've never driven on one and I never will.

The CAMPO board and CTRMA agreed to allow the use of proceeds from 183A to finance US 290E. Before this agreement the "profits" of a particular toll road could on be used in that facilities' corridor (a 1 mile buffer) for other transporation projects, e.g. 183A could be used to finance improvements on FM 1431. Hypothetitacally this approach could allow profitable, cost-effective, toll roads to finance tollways less viable, e.g. SH 45 SW.

I figured out that driving from a point about 10 miles north of the start of 130 to a part of middle Round Rock east of IH35 versus driving IH35 to that same location would save me 5 miles and about 5 minutes. Depending on time of day, the time to go to the airport from north of the northern start of 130 would take about the same amount of time. Taking the 45 loop to Mopac might save 5 minutes.

Do I use them? Sometimes. But when I really test it, the time saved isn't all that great unless there's something wonky going on on the non-toll roads.

I had an aversion to them initially, but they have been very useful in getting me to and from my new job. Twice a week I have to drive 130. It's longer mile-wise than 35 but significantly faster(particularly heading S past 3pm). Completely avoid the I35 downtown bottleneck. I also use a little of the Loop 1/ I45 interchange a few times a week. Very fast. If I'm not pressed for time though, I will take the back roads. I think as long as there are other options for people who don't want to use them, they're fine.

They are a bit pricey though compared to other toll roads I've used.

For me, being East of Round Rock I find that they do save me time. If I just straight shoot down 79 it'd take me about 20-30 minutes catching red lights along the way just to get to 35. With the toll road I can just head straight South and be in, say, Cedar Park in that same amount of time.

From what I can tell, all they do is stack up central Mopac that much faster.
