I think I can get over the scorpion thing. I'm planning a visit late December/Early January. I plan on staying somewhere in SoCo since that's where I think I want to live. Any recommendations on things I should do/see? I'd like to check out some good local music and just get a feel for the area in general. Is it safe for a 20 something year old girl to go out to bars alone in Austin? I'm visiting by myself since I want to learn what it's really like to be in a new city alone.

Good calls above.

If you do the downtown bar thing check out 4th street as well as 5th for places like Red Fez and Cubra libra.

Go on the first Thursday so you can do the whole SOCO first thursday thing as well...

Your picking one of the best areas to help you avoid home sickness from Portland

Thanks, everyone!

rg80, I'm from Nashville, not Portland. But I'll have to look into that First Thursday thing.

Any hotel recommendations? I think you have to be 25 to rent a car so I'll be walking or riding the bus everywhere.
