Are the bats out in mid-March? The ones IN Austin? We have a smaller population here in Round Rock, and I did see them out at dusk last night... but I remember when I was visiting last summer, there were better months (or something) to see them, then others?

Anyway, the in-laws will be here March 11-18. If we go down to that bridge - will we likely see them?

Default Bat Question

Okay, I have to ask, (since my husband and I are planning on relocating to Austin) what's the story with the bats? I know you can view them under the bridge but I'm wondering: are they a big problem in all neighborhoods? Do they bother people or pets? All this bat talk really scares me!

The bats are great and don't bother anyone. Of course, if you see a bat on the ground, don't touch it. Bats eat bugs. Anything that eats bugs is a good thing.

The bats are Mexican Freetail (I think that is the right name) and are rather tiny. They eats, literally, tons of mosiquitos and insects. I suppose there could be a rabid bat, the same as any other animal (skunks, racoons, etc.) but I have not heard of it around here that I can recall.

There are 'bat houses' that you can buy or make to try and get bats to reside in your yard. This supposedly helps with the local mosiquito population down....

Re: pets - our cat would occasionally manage to snag a bat and was quite proud of it....

They don't bother people. They are in the sky, and they come out at dusk to hunt and feed for the night - but they stay up! As long as you aren't a bug, or don't fly - your interaction with them will be limited.

Seeing them come out and night and fly across the sky in formation is really amazing.

Not sure if I would call it formation...it looks more like smoke flowing down the river when you watch them take flight . It is really quite a sight to see. I personally prefer standing on the bridge, so you can see way down the river as the head out....
