We are looking at moving into one of the condos (este) on the EAST side of 35 on 6th street. Anyone live in this area? How do you feel about your home/car/self being safe? I know that it's a changing area but it gets scary looking really quickly. Thanks for your time

Sorry, typo! :-)

Do you mean the east side of IH35?
Where specifically do you find a "scary" looking area west of IH35 downtown?

Steve

Yes, the east side...sorry...typo

Well there seem to be some very run down neighborhoods in that area in between the newly built areas. I am going to be living there by myself and don't want to feel unsafe...just wanting to check. There seem some projects ect in that area.

Well, I think the best research you can do is go hang out in the area at some coffee shops, restaurants, etc. and talk to the locals. I think the area holds a lot of promise long term, but it's still in the revitalization stage of the neighborhood life cycle. The projects are permenant, the schools are very poor, but the location is outstanding. In the end, location will trump everything else, but it's hard to know the timeline for the cycle to reach what we'd call stable/mature.

If I were single and 23, as I was when I arrived in Austin in 1985, I'd be in today's East Austin in a second. As a single female, your safety is an issue but I think you'll find that a lot of other young singles have discovered the area and will give testimony to what they've experienced so far. But you definately need to get out on the street and talk to some of the locals over there.

Steve

Thanks so much for your input, Steve. I will be living there for about a year by myself and then my husband will be back in the states from Iraq after that. The location is really great for the long term investment; which is what we are really looking at. Also, since we don't plan on have any kids during the time we would live there we don't really care about the schools for us personally. Thanks so much for your advice. :-)
