I am in a band from Phoenix, Az which seams to be the worst music scene in the country. We are tired of it hear and want to move to a better scene. We've been looking at Portland a lot lately and have really liked what we've seen. But recently someone recommended Austin. So we checked it out and it seems to have a great scene as well.
It seems like there are a lot of ups and downs to both places. Portland has more nature, better weather(I'm from phx so I'm a little tired of the sun and the heat), it's closer together so biking to work is doable, it seems like more hip restaurants and health food places. But it looks like it's harder to get a job.
But we're trying to be full time musicians, so jobs aren't that important, I'm not looking for a career just some part time job that lets me play show's at night. I'd like to move to a place where it's possible to make a decent amount of money playing shows or playing acoustic outside for tips.
Thanks for your help

Oh and if you want to hear the band, maybe it will give you a better idea of which scene will except us more check out MySpace.com - DOURCYNIC - PHOENIX, Arizona - Rock / Progressive / Jam Band - www.myspace.com/dourcynic

If it's a jam band, I'm thinking Portland would be a better fit.

Not much of a jam band scene in Austin?
We're kind of a jam band, but we're heavier. We have lots of set songs, and then we also do long improv instrumental jams. Check out the site though and see for yourself.

Portland sounds awesome compared to Austin. There used to be a running joke about the Austin Music Network and that once you were on it, you can kiss your music career goodbye.
