Born & Raised in Seattle.
Have lived in Los Angeles since 1963.
Moving to South Austin in late March.
Our home is currently under construction and we are flying there on Tuesday (6) for a week to make some decisions and meet some vendors.
The house we're getting in Austin would cost us 6-8 times as much in Los Angeles, depending on the area.
The cost of living is 37% less in Texas than in California. Our car & homeowners insurance will be cut in half.
What's the downside?

All I know is that our house in Steiner shot up in value substantially the year after we bought it (we bought it in May 2005). However, it's value has dropped every year since then. It is still worth a nice chunk more than we paid for it, we didn't do anything stupid like 100% financing, and we don't plan on moving, so we're not really worried. But I have seen house values around here going down pretty steadily. And if my appraisal doesn't go down next year, I'll be the first one to file an appeal.
