Hello,

My wife and I are looking at Austin again and I've got a few questions.

One, I'm wanting to find a permanent position at a company as a Software Architect. This is a top level programmer type of Job. I see many contractor positions in the area but I don't seem to get a good feel for what kind of opportunities are out there as far as permanent projects. I'm sure there is telcom, health insurance, and financial - however are there any profitable web development or business application shops in the area? The idea of startups, entertainment or social networking (think Digg or MySpace type sites) is attractive but I can pretty much design anything. If anyone has experience with this your thoughts would be great. Most of my past experience is in web apps around Manufacturing or Pharmaceutical.

Secondly, the live music scene sounds awesome. I've sung, written songs, and played guitar for about 15 years and just started to play drums for the past 3. However I'm mostly into more of funk/jazz/rock type of stuff and the videos I see on Youtube or forums I read it sounds like the area is dominated by Rock and Country. I don't mind these styles but I wonder are there opportunities to find a band out there with some music styles that are a bit more off the beaten path?

Thanks in advance!

My husband is a senior software engineer for a company called Troux (www.troux.com) (broken link). They are interviewing right now - but I'm not sure if they're looking for an architect. He's a C++ guy, but there are other applications written primarily in Java. Troux does business application software. Sorry I can't be more specific - I'm not a 'computer' person...

If you would like some more info, send me a PM and I'll ask my husband.

Hi Mrs. Engle,

My husband is a Senior Manager of Software Development. He manages over the development of complex software systems. His current project in Denver is coming to a close in the next month or two, and we are desperate to move back to Austin this summer, so we can get settled before school starts for our three children in the fall.

I just checked out that website you provided and it only listed openings in the Sales Department. Are there others available not posted on their website? Maybe your husband would know?

My husband has been looking for jobs in Austin for the last month, and so far has not heard back on any of the resumes he has submitted. At this moment, "patience" is not part of my vocabulary, unfortunately.

Any references you or your husband can provide is much appreciated.

Masalamomma - my husband says they've been getting their interviewees through headhunting services. As a matter of fact, that's how he got the job. He started there last August. He posted his resume on Monster.com, and that's how they found him. We heard very little for about a month, then the phone wouldn't stop ringing! If your husband hasn't tried that, it's definitely a good avenue. I would be happy to ask who the headhunter(s) is/are and pass that on.

After reading the first post, I asked my husband about who they were looking for, and they really need more code monkeys than anything. As he says, they have too many chiefs...

Another place you might check is Siemens ITS (ITS=Intelligent Traffic Systems). This is my husband's former employer, and he still works contract for them. www.itssiemens.com

As soon as I find out what headhunter(s) they're using, I'll post it ASAP.

Evonius,
I will be moving to Austin in Sept. and am a musician as well(mostly experimental electro-acoustic...but with a high tolerance and interest for other styles as well). I have been investigating this as well and what I've found, is that there is indeed much non-mainstream types of music in Austin. But like most places, you'll need to dig a bit. I am a firm believer that the most important thing for a vibrant music scene is that music is important to the community...once you have that, you'll find an audience. Check out these links:

Not much listed in the way of jazz, but I'm sure it's there
