My hubby has this whole week off, but we are totally broke so we can't take a real holiday. What we can do, however, is a day trip. I was thinking Enchanted Rock, but we are taking along an infant and two year old. Any suggestions? Could we do Enchanted Rock with the kiddos?

You might go to LOOK at Enchanted rock, but you aren't going to want to hike up it with a 2 y/o, much less an infant. The Austin Zoo is one of our cheap trips with our 2 y/o, but if you are looking for something outdoorsy, try McKinney Falls state park or Bastrop state park.

We took our 2-year-old up Enchanted Rock, long ago (he's 36 now), but it does take some doing.

You might also think about hiking at Pedernales Falls. We found that fun with the little ones.

Is San Antonio too far a drive for you for a day trip? They supposedly have a wonderful zoo there. I haven't been yet so I cannot comment. When our son was two he LOVED the zoo. He is older now and still does.

you don't need to go to s.a. save that for when they are older. right now the austin zoo is exactly appropriate. you can take a picnic/cooler, it's inexpensive, right here in town, and you might not be impressed but i promise you the kids will think they are in heaven

Austin zoo is a great idea. Tomorrow, however, we are off to the Cameron Zoo in Waco. I've never been, so it should be interesting. I'm carpooling with a friend and we'll have 2 five year olds and a 3 year old.

We just went to the Austin zoo with our 3 year old last weekend and he loved it. So did we! Just don't go with very high expectations and you may be pleasantly surprised. Definitely take the kids on the train ride and check out the wonderful views. It was a fantastic day for us.

There is quite a lot of fun to be had strolling around the perimeter trail at Enchanted Rock, staying on level ground but lovely scenery - and the 2 year old can have a tiny taste of clambering on very gentle grippy rock (as long as it's dry!) on the low slopes. We did the base trail a couple of weeks ago and all had fun. Lots of wildlife to see, we saw some kind of mountain goats!

It's a lovely drive from there to Fredericksburg, the town is very pretty and the Christmas lights are lovely in all the stores and esp at the central Marketplatz. Our kids loved it .

The Cameron Zoo was great a few years ago when I went, and I hear it's been improved.
