I just did a search on realtor.com for the type of house we're looking for. 3-bedroom, max price of 125k. I was expecting like 8 results or so.

There were OVER 200 RESULTS! Holy crap!

They're not mansions, of course, but that's not what we're looking for. This is incredible. Are wages very low in Austin or something?

We're actually not hipsters, and don't really enjoy hipsters, but have much in common with hipster-ish people. We love indie music, crafting, and researching primitivism, anarchism, and so on. We're simple-living, not in the terms of "I'm going to only buy $500 organic yoga pants" but in the sense of "We love lentil soup." We will unschool our daughter. We love nature. Would Austin be a good fit for us?

Would Austin be a good fit for you? Yes.

Would the neighborhoods where you can find three bedroom homes for 125k be a good fit for you? Maybe if you are hipster-ish people who like stretch pants, Walmart, drive thru windows and Chevy Tahoes. Or discotecas, depending on the neighborhood.

I just hate how the cheaper neighborhoods are the ones like that. It's not like everyone who enjoys creativity is rich

A lot of the 125K houses aren't in bad neighborhoods, they just aren't in the immediate vicinity of downtown austin. Our house was only 150K, but then again, we live about half an hour from Downtown.

Okay, you've given me a challenge, since I used to be you long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. I'm going to jump on the MLS and see what I can turn up that might be in your kind of neighborhood that's in your price range. I have a couple of ideas, really, but want to verify before I speak up.

You likely wouldn't be close to downtown, but there are delightful pockets around the area that might suit.

Okay, my first search of the MLS with just 3 bedroom, 2 bath, $125,000 or less turned up 600+ hits, but I played with it a bit.

You might want to consider the area south of Ben White down past Stassney, off of Manchaca, area code 78745. Some older homes in there that might suit, some of them in your price range, and it's an up and coming "hot" area.

There are also some interesting neighborhoods in Cedar Park, believe it or not.

Still looking.

Your description "screams" Austin. You'd do fine here IMHO

First off, use austinhomesearch.com instead of realtor.com. realtor.com are listings agengts paid to put on there. austinhomesearch is the complete MLS listing.

Also, a lot of the houses you are seeing are that cheap for a reason - most likely because they are in really shady neighborhoods.

But it sounds like, lifestyle-wise, you will fit right in.

That pretty much sums it up.

Because, of course, NONE of that exists in Central Austin or anywhere West of 35 (dripping with sarcasm).
