Hey there my husband and I are looking to relocate from NW Indiana(25 miles from Chicago) to Texas and we keep throwing Austin around as a major possibility. Anyone out there a police officer in Austin or surronding areas....if so please respond and tell me the good/bad about your dept. Also if anyone can tell me about the school system....my son is in 2nd grade and a daughter who is 2(and she is Guatemalan really want to push spanish with her)

Well, if your husband is currently a police officer, I would seriously investigate how things will transfer over. I have a friend who moved here from Chicago. He was a Sheriff Deputy there for 13 years. Texas would not allow a lot of his training and such to transfer over and would only hire him as a cadet here in Travis County. So, I would thoroughly look into that.

In order to be a peace officer in Texas he would have to challenge the TCLEOSE Police Officer test. If he can't pass it ... then he would have to go through the academy. That being said I've worked at about 4 departments and we have had several officers come on, challenge the test, and pass from a variety of states. Check out the TCLEOSE site for the requirements. You may have to google it as I'm not sure the exact link.
