I've only been pulled over twice in my life. And both times it was crossing the border into Texas (7 years apart from each other!) So, definitely be careful. What else? Don't drink & drive here (or anywhere, adoy). I've never seen so many people pulled over by cops before in my life. Or so many accidents.

I know I just sounded negative, but Austin is really really great! Definitely check out the Alamo Theater. And personally I love love love the chicken tortilla soup at Kerbey Lane. But, I'd never had it before, so I have no idea if it's typical of great chicken tortilla soup. Also, don't just go to 6th St to see live music. Actually, don't go there at all to see live music (but DO get a burger at Casino El Camino. Oh. My. God.). Check out the clubs on Red River: Mohawk, Room 710, Club DeVille, Emo's, etc...

Welcome to Austin!

Default One more driving thing ....

Pay close attention to school zones in Texas. They are marked by flashing yellow lights and a new speed limit if the lights are flashing. I was warned about these when I first did a 6 week stay in Dallas, and the same thing holds true for Austin and area. The cops will patrol these areas during school hours and will pull you over for doing 31 if the limit is 30. If you are in traffic you will notice the whole flow slow down significantly, so you will be warned, however, if there is no traffic and you do not notice the lights, you could get a hefty fine at best, and hit a kid at worst.

If you have a GPS, you can set up a warning whenever you get close to a school.

The good thing is that the lights only come on when school starts of finishes, so most of the time it is not a major inconvenience. Once you get used to the system, you will appreciate it. It is much better to get this visible reminder instead of some kid jumping out from the sidewalk, or having to slow down for a school zone at all hours of the day.

Definitely get a GPS to learn the roads!!! They're a bit confusing around here... there's a lot of new roads and construction though so if you have an old GPS you may want to update the maps.

I'm not sure how things are in Michigan but in NY (where I just moved from) when you get off a highway, most times the exit ramps go upward and then you can cross over the highway. Here most exits go down and you cross under the highways... it can get confusing because everything looks the same under those overpasses and you may have no idea where you are and which way to go! Get the GPS... it saved me many times.

Oh and wait until you see the loops.... every road loops! Its great if you got off the wrong exit but you could end up going in circles loopiing forever! lol

Welcome to Austin!

Yep football is Religion in Texas.Like that Simpsons episode where everyone is in church and the pastor say's " I'm glad there are a few of us here that can resist the temptation of the game" and then someone gets up and shouts "Oh God the game " and runs out the church. Especially if you're in your life is empty and meaningless and football is the only way for you to hang on to something that makes you feel young and stupid lol!!

The clubs aren't that amazing either. You pay to go into a dark and spooky club and drink expensive drinks. Wow. That is so much fun to waste cash like that .

Football is fine but why are people so obsessed and obsessive about it there? It is weird and gets boring if you ask me. I also agree. Those people probably have empty lives and nothing else to look forward to.

Well that's not true at all. Usually a beer (lonestar, shiner) is about $4. Maybe $5 if it's a Sam Adams. I've never had to pay to get into Club Deville or Beauty Bar. I've paid $6 to get into Mohawk (it IS how the bands usually get paid you know). I think it's about $5/$6 to get into Room 710.

Most of the clubs on 6th Street seem really desperate to get you to go in. It can be a little creepy. They're all "How are you doing? Come inside!!"

I was downtown this past summer and when told that there was a cover at a club I started to walk away, only to be stopped by a guy who worked there that not only got me in for free but also got me a free drink!

It's always a good idea to check the weather reports during the winter.

On the other hand, in the summer be prepared for endless days of hot and hotter.
It's a good idea to check the WX reports any time of year. Other seasons bring monster thunderstorms, hail, tornados, flash floods, ice storms and heat so high it melts the roads, of course not all at the same time (normally).
