I think the fact we have people expressing there views in relationship to Austin is a pretty good indicator of how widespread it is there. Some Austin venues like Thundercloud subs or Bong cloud subs if you ask me, advocate the use of pot in Austin not to mention places like Gas Pipe Austin.

Exctacy can cause serious damage to your brain because it dumps so much serotonin at once that it reduces the brain's ability to reproduce it, leading to serious depression and other mental problems. I think tame drugs like pot should be decriminalized, although not legalized (I've known a lot of people start at pot and go drastically downhill, although it is certainly not the case with everyone that tries it), and harder more damaging drugs should continue to be illegal.

I haven't noticed much of a drug problem in Austin relative to anywhere else I've lived other than the fact that the very first interaction I had with an Austinite, at the first gas station in town we stopped at to fill up the U-Haul when I was moving here, was being asked if I had any pot to buy. I'm a normal-looking clean cut guy. Thats been it...it seems like a lot of pot floats around this town like many others, but I haven't encountered anything more (although that doesn't mean its not there).

Or places like Planet K, Oat Willie's, UT Austin, Amy's Ice Cream, the many music venues, etc. Or pretty much any outdoor festival here, one of the regular NORML protests at the capital, Willie Nelson concerts, or downtown marches.

Plus the use of the marijuana ticket law here: Austin is Weird: Tickets for Marijuana Possession : Austin Criminal Defense Lawyer ... for up to 4 ounces. That's quite a lot, actually.

So Austin is NOT a place for the uptight. If you prefer your recreational drug users behind bars, you can always move to ANY of the other cities in Texas.

Oh yes, ACL this year was a huge pot cloud. I'm not a smoker myself and while it didn't bother me, I'm glad I didn't have any drug tests in the weeks afterwards. I believe that is pretty typical of just about any large music festival however...I've heard second-hand that festivals like Bonaroo are crawling with all sorts of drugs.

I mainly found it odd that I was hit up for weed here because I look, dress, and act nothing like a stereotypical smoker. So far Austin is the only place where I've had that happen. I don't consider pot to be too much of a problem really...where I grew up in the Midwest has a huge meth problem, when I worked in a retail store we had to start stocking Sudafed behind the counter because it would be quickly stolen as soon as it was on the shelf...drugs like that are extremely damaging both physically and mentally to the users and their family, as well as the socioeconomic well-being of an area.

Meth is a huge problem all over Texas, too. And that's in cities which are not as "permissive" as Austin. Plus, I believe many prescription drugs are as damaging, if not more so, that recreational ones. Remember vioxx or that phen-phen drug? People did more damage to their heart valves using that for 6 months than years of cocaine use would do. Pharmaceutical companies are motivated to come out with new & IMO questionable drugs for ailments that are minor or already have good medicines to deal with them, because the patents for the previous drugs have run out and there is no more money to be made. Buyer beware....

Heh; It is not like our tax dollars, including property taxes or all the businesses that are popping up all over the place that is not giving enough.

Come'on, you and I both know Austin is a HOT spot right now

So let's pretend that moving to Texas is a benefit by not paying State taxes is a plus on that paycheck. So once you move here, build a family, home and secure job that everything is fine. Oh snap..... I just woke up and that was in the past.

Wake up!!

Austin, like any other city has growing pains and this is just the beginning!

Gosh - let's hope not! If there was, I am sure there would be like 25 booth's w/ .75 charge. Gett'em!!

Just like the toll road out here on hwy183 into Leander, the traffic users that use to toll is very low. I'm one of the suckers that pay. Forget waiting at the 1st exit that is not a toll and wait.

Wow.
What's the point then? How can you really enjoy the music if you're high? Is this what people have to do to make it enjoyable? Does this happen at Eeyore's Birthday, Spam-O-Rama and other Austin "cultural" events? It's been awhile since I've attended one.

Only in Austin will you find pot smoking at large concerts/festivals.
