My wife and I are moving to the Austin area mid-year and I'm thinking about starting my own business. I only have a nascent plan but the best idea might be teaming up with a CPA and running a targeted financial firm. I would handle the investment side (I have a BS in Finance from Boston College as well as the CFA charter and CFP designation) while my CPA partner would handle the tax. This is a stab in the dark but does that interest any CPAs out there?

I can't provide you with any answers specific to your question, but what I can tell you is that unless you have a nice sum of $$ squirreled away, I would be very hesitant to start a business here or anywhere in this economy.

I understand that I'm in a totally different line of work from you-I started my own tile business last summer. Things started off decent for a few months, but for the past several months I've been starving for work and the near future isn't looking bright either. As far as I'm concerned, 2010 can't get here fast enough!

Perhaps your line of work hasn't been hit quite as hard, but make no mistake, the Austin area is definitely mired in the recession with everyone else.

Thanks for taking the time to offer your advice; I agree completely, but my situation is unique. I have a sugar momma! My wife makes really good money in any environment and her job is recession-proof. I can afford to make minimal $ while building a business. It might be a bit emasculating having my wife be the sole breadwinner but I'm not complaining. By the way, how do you like Georgetown compared to Round Rock or Cedar Park?

Ok, this is kind of funny. To a degree, I'm kind of in the same boat you are. My wife makes enough in a secure job that we're getting by on basically just her income while I pursue my little business venture. It's tight enough, however, that it's not a situation we want to be in long term. Plus we don't have kids, yet anyway, so I can't even play the "Mr. Mom" role while things are slow. Anyway...

Georgetown kind of chose us. My wife found a job here, so it just made sense. While becoming quite large, Georgetown still has some small town charm with a great downtown and older areas. If you want an older neighborhood, Georgetown will offer the most selection, hands down.

Round Rock and Cedar Park are more suburban in nature, but are still desirable IMO. Most of the housing in those cities was built in the past 20 years. There's lots of nice neighborhoods in any of the cities in all price ranges. Any of them are clean and safe for the most part too. That's a pretty common theme up here in Williamson Co.

Some Austin folks may put it down as bland compared to Austin, but as far as I place to live, we like it. If you want to experience Austin, it's only 1/2 hour away.

My $.02.
