Same as you, from the Bay Area. Luckily, he was planning on moving anyway and had family to shack up with on a temporary basis if they said no and at the time the job market was still pretty good here so he wasn't too concerned with being out of work for long. Like I said, if you give the ultimatum, be prepared to walk - financially and emotionally. It's hard to do if you like your employer and have invested a lot of time in work.

You could consider going on contract with a firm like Triangle Technology. My husband knows the owners well from doing business with them and he feels like they have high quality placements.

Don't do it. IT jobs in Austin are scarce and reserved for cheap college kids.

Oops .. just saw CptRon's post now.

I work in IT as well. Here's the deal. Any and all recruiters will not bother with you until you are physically in <city name>. The reason being that too many people say they will move and back out at the last minute for whatever reasons and leave both the recruiter and client high and dry. They still won't even in times like these. Why risk it with someone out of state when you can draw from what's already there. I went thru this many times when relocating on my own. The only time they will work with out of state people is when the have a very specialized skill that is hard to come by.

You're in the same boat I'm in at the moment. I'm relocating from the midwest to Austin next month with no job lined up. I have a few friends I'm staying with while I find a one and place to live. This is my second move in two years because of the bad economy. Good luck to you.
