Here is what some parents think about the school. You can also go to the AISD website to see performance statistics.

Matthews has a great rep! Diverse group of students, lots of international students, as well as folks who work downtown and transfer their kids there. Lots of parental and community involvement.

Similar to Zilker, it that it is an urban school with a somewhat challenging group of students (not suburban uniformity, that is for sure) that succeeds well enough to draw in middle-class transfer students.

Here is their website:

this is great - thanks. Does anyone have any direct experiences with Mathews? I want to hear good and bad. On the good side, I've heard it's a decent education and very diverse. On the bad side, I've heard it's only decent. Although I love the diversity, does this pose problems for educating the student body as a whole? Hate to sound this way, but are there language issues and do the teachers spend a lot of time on ESL kids? And, again, hate to sound this way, but it is after all, a public school in Texas - all the testing, lack of funding, etc.

Default hola!

i attended mathews elementary from 1955 to 1960 and it was an excellent school. i recently attended a reunion of sorts a couple of years ago and was very satisfied and impressed by the school principal as she took me through a tour of the school, bringing back memories.

i would like to know if anyone else attended mathews elementary from the years 1955 to 1960 who actually may still have a group photo of their classmates for any of those years? the history department at the library in austin does not carry elementary school year books, but they do all junior and high schools, though. wha a shame. help!

I did some work/observation at Matthews and was impressed with the staff I spoke with and observed, the projects the students were working on, and the students themselves. I would feel confident sending my child there. Hopefully, you'll get some feedback from parents.

Lightbulb Matthews Elem.

Yes, it has a strong reputation. It has the most diverse student body since it allows children from around the city to attend even if they do not live in the district. Your child will be in a liberal and multi cultural climate if that is what you are seeking-perfect match!
