So we have an out of town visitor coming in this week and she wants to see Sixth Street. Of course, we just realized it's SXSW this week. Is it going to be possible for us to go downtown in the PM if we are not part of that scene? In other words, we don't have badges, we don't want badges, are there any clubs that will be open to regular people? Furthermore, should we expect parking to go from $7-10 in the evenings to $20 or more?

The music fest hasn't started yet. (Think it starts this weekend). So if you mean the next few days, it will be over run with film and interactive people, but just extra crowded. When the music fest starts I would not attempt it. A better thing would be to go to south congress and walk around because there are tons of bands playing for free.

Yeah, she gets in Tuesday so it sounds like it will be during the music festival.

Is there any kind of shuttle service going in from outlying areas? If so, maybe we can just go and walk around to people watch.

Short answer: No

It is pretty much all SXSW all the time. You might be able to find a place that isn't doing a showcase but they will probably have a big cover. There are SXSW venues on Sixth Street as well as 4th street and a few clubs outside of downtown.

Good luck.

There is a shuttle service that goes to hotels outside the downtown area but it's not free:

I really would consider going to South Congress with your friends though. A lot of stuff outdoors that's free.

PLENTY of free or badgeless stuff going, including on 6th street. If your visitors don't mind a few crowds or having to park & walk a bit, you should have a great time.

I agree. And don't forget Auditorium Shores has all kinds of free shows all next weekend. There are vendors and such and it's pretty family friendly as well.

Have fun!

Threadgills does free shows too, I believe. We risked Auditorium Shores a few years ago, but mostly we don't venture out during SXSW.

We'll be there tonight (wife and I), and were at the same time last year. We don't got no stinking badges either.

Our routine is always the same. Dinner at Roaring Fork. Then walk to the Hideout for coffee and a dessert. Then we stroll up 6th street toward Red River and back. Then we retrieve the car from the RF valet and head home.

It's about a 3 hour night out. We don't drink so we don't actually go into any clubs or anything, but we do enjoy the vibe, hearing the music that spills out of the clubs, and seeing all the interesting people.

I have observed something odd though:

With regard to attire and appearance, how do you tell the difference between a homeless person and a SXSW attendee? The homeless person has no badge and the SWSW attendee doesn't ask for spare change. Other than that, from a people watching perspective, there isn't much difference. I'm not sure why the sxsw crowd is such a scuffy looking bunch, but they are.

Steve
