Another place you might want to check out that is kind of like a suburb in the middle of the city is the Mueller development Mueller Austin: Explore (http://www.muelleraustin.com/explore/index.php - broken link) . It's a live, work, play type development and it's only 2 miles from UT. You can get a brand new 4 bedroom home there starting around 400K and Standard Pacific builds a 5 bedroom home starting at 470K. The yards are pretty small there, and the houses are close together, but every home is no more than 600 ft from a park. There are miles of hike and bike trails, playgrounds, and 3 parks, with more to come. I think you would definitely find some "crunchy" neighbors and racial diversity in the schools. Like someone mentioned above, greatschools.net would be a good place to look for that information.

Thank you all. We do wear deodorant, but my husband drives a Prius. I have a mini-van. We do eat organic, and want our children to be happy and financially successful. :-)

No guns, but I've been to Willie Nelson's concerts more than once, and Willie and Waylon, well, what can I say.

Will check out these suggestions! Thanks!

Yes, I have heard of Willie Nelson. However, when someone just says willie my brain doesn't have a track to willie nelson. My apologies.

If you move to Texas, you'll have to understand that some of our icons go by only one name, even though they have two, and everyone knows who you're talking about: Willie. Lyle. Lance. And a few others.

That's funny! He should be the official greeter when someone steps off the airplane at Bergstrom. LOL Just like in Hawaii. But instead of a lei maybe he can hand out thongs...I dunno.

How could I have forgotten Leslie?!?!?!

I thought of Stevie, but he's usually "Stevie Ray Vaughan" said fast. But, yeah, Kinky and Janis I should have mentioned, too.

So I'm guessing Leslie is the one guy that rides the bike with a thong? (so I've heard already and I'm not even there) Or is he naked? Was he personally responsible for the Austin being weird thing?

Check out the SW burbs -- it's pretty good but from what I've seen in my 6 months or so here, not terribly diverse however.

We wear deodorant and eat organic and have a happy kid. We drive an old Honda and Mazda truck and are "greening" our 70s house. Next car might be a hybrid. Don't have guns but think people should have the right to have them if they want.

Has anyone mentioned the super expensive property taxes to you? Intown is $$$. Might make you reconsider your price range. We did. It was very disappointing.
