I agree, mimimomx3 - the automatic jump to that it's something racial rather than that perhaps it's something personal is a bit odd, at best.

I also agree that the job situation is a bit iffy, but, then, it's iffy everywhere right now, and less here than many places.

how could it be personal if you do not know the person? or you see the same behaviors with many people?

I just wonder if maybe people are nicer to certain types of people than others and that's where the idea that Austin is or isn't a friendly city comes from. Like what readymade posted where she got good service in this store and that and made a friend at this store and that, maybe the people working in that store were so friendly because she looks like she has money. Maybe they were friendly because she was white or asian or black or whatever race they love the best. Maybe they were friendly because they took some ecstacy that morning and just felt at one with the universe. I just wonder if people, as a whole, are "friendlier" to certain races of people.

SWKHAMMR,

First, its not impossible to find a place in the neighborhoods you asked about for under 1K a month but not likely either. In most of Austin you're probably going to get into a 1/1. I would recommend you request a copy of the CapMetro schedules & routes then compare prices along those routes. Transportation is quicker if you don't have to transfer. Many places in Austin you can bike to.

Second, there are alot of Journalism majors leaving UT every year. So, don't expect to find a job in your field. Most of us who graduated from UT don't even work in our respective fields.

Third, Austin has alot of good people in it. You'll find that the River divides relaxed south Austin from uptight north Austin and I35 divides the haves from the havenots.
More importantly, you're gonna find friendly people if your friendly. Homeless, we got 'em. Just like the strip in Vegas. What's up with that anyway? All the beggars & vagabonds are on the Harrah's side of the strip while the Bellagio/Cesar's Palace side is clean and free of the pesky critters.

Last, you might want to check out the Austin Chronicle for things to do like eats, events, and music. Likewise the Statesman is good for info also.

Good Luck.

Any * holes you encounter will most likely be around "uppity" parts of town such as 6th/Lamar or Westlakes/Eanes or Circle C (lot of beta-snobs there). I am really not trying to cast a net here, but these areas tend to showcase the entitled attitudes (getting cutt off and honked at by people in Beemer SUV's etc.) 95% of the people in Austin are nice, but certain areas will have certain people. That being said, S. Austin has the friendliest ppl - hands down.

Well, I'm essentially white. Meaning, anyone looking at me would think I'm 100% Irish (even though I'm mostly Armenian). And I don't think I look like I have money. I'm mostly a jeans & t-shirt kind of person, and my dog chewed on my favorite shoes (that I got from Payless) and I refuse to stop wearing them everywhere.

I would never presume to know what it's like to face racial discrimination (although I've face gender discrimination of course... usually in computer stores... and never in Austin). I can't say if people here are generally more racist or not, but I suspect not. I've yet to have anyone make a racist remark to me. i.e. "I don't know about that part of town.... there's a lot of black people there!"

That DID happen to me in SoCal, though. Usually about Mexicans or people from the Middle East.
