Hi; I'm a Portlander considering the move to Austin for work. The things I would really miss about Portland are the lushness, ecofriendliness, the indie vibe, the progressiveness, good public transportation, outdoor activity, and cheap and casual nightlife for 20-somethings... and of course the good coffee and foodiness.
I've never been to Austin but from what I hear it has a somewhat similar vibe to Portland... can anyone give any input on this? Will I be deprived of anything or just enjoy a sunnier version of my hometown?
Thanks!

No lushness! We are fairly wooded for Texas but compared to PNW, Austin is dry and dusty, especially right now since we are in the middle of a terrible, severe drought. Our public transportation is adequate but not fantastic, most people will need a car, we are progressive for Texas and very live and let live but it is quite different from Portland. Austin is great city for foodies and we have independent coffee houses etc. Lots of outdoor activities etc. But we are NOT just a sunny version of Portland! No way.

There is more sprawl, more suburbs, more Republicans, more gun owners, and more Christians. Please visit before deciding to move here. Oh, and it is HOT. Summer lasts from late April to late October.

Texas is like no other state. We LOVE Texas. We LOVE our state and we pride ourselves on being Texans and we will defend Texas until we draw our last breath. A lot of times people don't know just how much state pride we have in Texas until they move here. They don't understand how someone can be liberal and still support gun rights and responsible ownership. They don't understand how we're allowed to make fun of Texas and you're not. The big shocker for a lot of people moving to Texas is all the pride, the flags, the symbolism, how everyone knows the pledge to the Texas flag and the state song, things like that. That's something to consider when you move here - how much BIG Texas State Pride can you handle?

Re-read centralaustinite's and ArkLaTexana's posts. They're pretty spot-on. Austin is great for foodies: Whole Foods was born here! What more needs to be said?

As for politics: something around 75-80% of people in PDX vote Democratic, whereas in Austin we have a popular third party: Libertarian. So think Libertarian-type liberal social values vs Democratic-type liberal social values. It's acceptance of differences (Austin) vs mandatory acceptance of differences (Portland). Your neighbor in Austin might be a vocal racist (as mine is). Would you be ok with his different opinions, or would you snub him?

Austin and Portland are very different cities. If you come here expecting a sunny version of Portland you will be disappointed. That said, I would much rather live here than in Portland.

Default Hmm...

Obviously I'd like to visit first but it's just not always possible, is it. Well, thanks for the responses... didn't know about whole foods, that is a good sign I actually do know a good chunk of libertarians so I think I could handle that; I do think that the dryness and dustiness would be a difficult change though to be honest!
