I'm a native Texan and will be moving back to the state after living 15 years in DC and St Louis. While I don't have any grandkids YET, I did coach my son in youth football in DC, and he became and excellent wrestler as well. I'd like to join a youth league as a coach, both because I like doing it and so when I finally DO have some grandkids, they will have a great place to play (assuming they want to, of course).

Where is youth football particularly popular in the Austin area? What clubs are well-organized? And are there any youth wrestling organizations in the area? Wrestling is GREAT training for football (you can tell I'm Texan, yes? )

I'm a big believer in playing for fun at that level. The NFL scouts are not going to give a crap what a prospect's peewee record was, so why worry about it? If you teach the kids to love the game and have fun doing it, the winning will come on its own. The hardest part of coaching youth football is teaching that to the parents...

My real job is computer geek, so if there's a part of the city where that kind of job's more prevalent, that would be helpful as well.

There are several good youth leagues:

WAYA is in central Austin

Youth NFL football:

I9 sports:

I have heard that I-9 is really big on the "positive" playing experience, where every kid, athletic or not, gets a chance to throw the ball, catch, play. Teams are small (5 kids?) and it is very developmental. In some of the other leagues, even as early as 2nd or 3rd grade, 1 kid gets picked to be quarterback and 1 is wide receiver or running back and all the others are given the less glamorous positions for the rest of the season. More competitive. You just need to shop for what you're looking for along the those lines.

Of course, there is always Pop Warner for youth tackle football, and that's very popular too.
