This is truth well spoken. It is a good thing that I don't think much of those lists and my personal criteria for a livable city are very different.

If not being ranked dissuades some people from coming here and gives us more time to plan for our still high growth rates this is not necessarily a bad thing.

9 northeast/midatlantic cities and no Texas cities. Hmmmmmm. Maybe it's really not the coolest, most progressive, best place in the whole world.

Austin/San Antonio/Hill Country area must be on the top of anyone place to live when compared to the east coast

It just depends on what you're looking for. Fast-paced lifestyle? A winter w/ snow? Lots of rain? Not too much heat? Austin probably isn't what you're looking for. I totally get that. You'd be better off on the east coast (but NOT Worcester, heh). Heck, I'd still be living there myself if it weren't for the horrible horrible depressing winters.

seriously? Go onto the Portland Maine forum and check out how many threads pertain to "are you staying here/why are all the young people leaving/does this town have a future, etc..." The same goes for the Balt. forum. The people living there make it sound like heroin use is out of control and 75% of the city you can get mugged in broad daylight.
I really don't know how to tell the difference between truth and marketing. Not trying to be a downer, but the truth is out there, and it won't always be in a Forbes article.
I went to Portland, ME last October. It's a nice town but it's way too small and boring for me. Austin is way better than Portland, ME. I can tell you that.

Yeah I agree 99% of these best places lists are total BS. One day your city is at the top of the list and the next day it doesn't make the list at all. They'll have BFE Missouri at the top of the list tomorrow. I'm going to create my own list and put Mayberry as the #1 place to live.

You know, when I think of most livable, I think of cities with the high quality of life. With that said, there are many other cities that qualify for the list (Boston, San Francisco and if they add Canada, Vancouver and Toronto). Of course, this is Forbes. I wouldn't expect them to make an accurate list.
