Today, Austin made the top 15 cities for affordability. It was on the front page of the net this morning: actually it was entitled, budget cities. Go figure!!! I really think all these studies are a joke as I have mentioned before. The same Forbes report suggests one of the best places to grow old: Palm Beach Fl as well as listing West Palm Beach as one of the most dangerous cities. Now do you understand why I think these studies are really dumb.

I do not think Austin is an expensive place to live, but I haven't lived there either.

We were ranked right under NY city, as the most expensive cities to live in, just a couple of years ago.
Um, no. Not even close to being possible.

just goes to show that statistics have no innate value--they can be manipulated to "prove" whatever the person wants them to...

That particular example is not surprising; it's like that all along the S Florida coast. The coastline area may be a secure paradise, but travel west (inland) a mile or two and the neighborhoods drop dramatically. It's like two different worlds. West Palm Beach was initially created as housing for the servants of Palm Beach residents, BTW.

Just about all the statistics I've seen over the years said the Texas cities have low cost of living. The Texas cities always rank as the cheapest big cities or almost the cheapest big cities.

you are right, the interesting thing is your comment about driving a mile or so: I certainly would not want to recommend seniors live somewhere so close to a high crime area. I just do not like these studies except to read for entertainmnet purposes. LOL

Good, I'd like to think that Austin isn't the only decent place to live in the country.

Because the stories about cops shooting guys in the back doesn't usually make a Forbes list.

Yeah, I think we are a bit of a media darling. How 8 people getting shot by a rap group outside a 6th street club doesn't make national news, I'll never understand... even though no one died, I would think it's at least somewhat sensationalistic.
