Is there an Austin bookstore, chain or non-chain, that is well known for carrying an extensive and well-stocked selection of software development books? I'll be in town this weekend and would like to peruse books on a variety of topics in this subject area.
Thanks

Try Half-Price Books. There are numerous locations and every time I've been there there is a decent selection of used software books. They may not have what you are looking for, but it's worth a shot, and the prices are good.

The many university bookstores around campus are sure to be full of them. Check both new and used textbook stores. Also the UT libraries, if you just want to peruse.

Book People on 6th and Lamar, local bookstore, probably has many.

Half Price is also a good suggestion. This is a tech town, so the used bookstores should have more than their fair share of software engineering books.

Barnes is insidiously overpriced, Half-Price Books is like a computer book history museum. Would you trust university book stores or anything in between? I sure wouldn't.

If you want brick-and-mortar software engineering book browsing at Amazon.com prices, you go to Frys.

For a time Borders was considered a better place to go for technical books than B&N. Since you said "perusal" I assume price is not an issue since you're mainly looking to keep yourself occupied, not to actually purchase anything. I also wouldn't call B&N "overpriced", they simply charge MSRP for anything that isn't a best seller and if you don't have one of their "cards" (which does cost an annual fee so any savings needs to be calculated based on that fact). What is there not to "trust" about a university bookstore? Are they carrying pirated copies or something? Biggest problem with HPB is that the selection varies by store so it's completely hit or miss and they are often likely to be a bit behind the latest trends (though it's often surprising how current the stuff is there sometimes). And of course there is Fry's which if you're a nerd is always worth visiting anyway.
