I'm not inside of Austin, but when we were in Colorado we had gas heat in our house. When we moved back to Texas we discovered that it was hard to find. There are a few neighborhoods out where we are that are on propane but we decided we didn't want to pay the extra fees they charged to have it. We had a realtor tell us that one of the reasons many neighborhoods aren't tapped into the City gas lines is because (can't remember if he said the City or the Gas Company) charges an enormous amount to let neighborhoods tap into the system and most builders don't want to pay it.
