It certainly had a noticeable impact on I-35... seemed to a be a lot of out of towners cruising it like it was the strip or something... many more escalades, lincolns, humvees, 20+ rims, and crotch rockets en masse. For a second, I almost thought I was at a moving car show! Peeps were doing tricks right on the interstate standing up on motorcycles, driving on the median or in the Emergency lanes; dragging in bit sized doses (due to traffic)... I haven't been here a long time, but I've never seen I-35 quite like this in Central Austin.

Anyway, I'm not a fan of relays but would have probably checked out the Cajun Festival going on downtown were it not for the obscene traffic congestion.

Which is unfortunate. You often read "claims" of Austin being a progessive city, and one that embrasses unquiness and diversity (keep ATX weird, etc.). But the city has historically had a terrible reputation amoung African-American professionals throughout the country. Basically, they know not to move there. I'm sure many remember the issues that were rased a few years ago about the quality of life for them in Austin...

And unfortunatley, despite efforts by city and community leaders to improve things, nothing seems to be working...

Wow. You cite a few mostly dated articles to back up your point? And you don't live here but in Charlotte?

What is clear to me from living here for 25 years is that black families are moving into areas outside the city limits. That says black families are increasingly comfortable with life away from areas that are historically more concentrated with African Americans. Their jobs may not be in central Austin. Their jobs could be on the 360 tech corridor or in Round Rock and they want to live closer to their work.

Is there work to do? I'm sure there is. But the Texas Relays issues are not a fair indicator of the status of African Americans in Austin nor the general attitude of Austin.

I resent that you are insinuating that young blacks are considered a nuisance. This is a very ignorant comment for you to make.
I agree with you prettynicky, however please note that you are responding to a post that was over 2 years old. You necroposted a thread from April, 2007.
