Young African-American family considers relocation (Houston, Dallas: low income, crime, house)

OK M-7 How did you make out?
I have just been presented with the opportunity to relo to the Austin area. I have 2 daughters, 12 and 9. They are pitching a "hissi' " about relocating from VA. This is a perfect opportunity for me career wise, and I know the kids will fair well. I just need to minimize the stress for them. They are LAX players, swimmers, and flute & violin little peole. What are any thoughts on best schools and neighborhoods in the 250-300K housing arena? Thank you all in advance!!! I love this group!

I know there are several good lacrosse teams around, but not sure on details of the calibre/coaching. Lacrosse is a relatively new to the sports scene in schools here. I know that there is a good team up in the Westwood HS area, but that it is an extracurricular program and only indirectly supported by the school.

Round Rock is a great place to relocate with kids. $250 will still buy 2200 - 3000 sq ft in a great neighborhood with great schools.

There is a new rink opening in Round Rock that will host inline hockey in addition to box-lacrosse and a couple of other uses. It is called Austin Sports Arena and will be on Gattis School and Red Bud Lane. Should open mid to late October and they will probably run 4 seasons a year.

I think it would be great for Austin to be more diverse. After living in Atlanta for years, it's weird for me that we are lacking racial diversity. I agree with your statement Trainwreck!

Evidently, from the sounds of it on these boards Steiner Ranch is heaven on earth. Any place outside of Steiner Ranch is inferior and your children will be heathens.


My two cents is move to Hutto. The area is very diverse which is very interesting since it's so rural and the city is suppose to be "progressive".

Is Round Rock very diverse? Someone mentioned Pflugerville being diverse as well. How diverse is it?

Between the 2, in which town would we most likely find culturally diverse neighborhoods/low crime? Safety/low-crime/friendliness and diversity are very important to us.

As well, my husband and I have small children, so we would like to find other children for them to play with, especially, but not limited to other minority children, since they are harder to find.


Any minorities here have any experiences to share about either RR and/or PVille? What are those areas like as far as diversity.

How is the shopping as well in RR and PVille? Malls? Super Walmart etc.? Non-denominational churches (not huge)?

Are there a lot of family friendly things to do? We are into music ie: ballets, plays, orchestras, musicals, children's theater productions etc. As well as tennis, walks in the park and hiking, just to name a few.

You can actually find all of those in Pflugerville and Round Rock. Lots of kid friendly things to do and lots of new shopping. Both are very diverse and relatively safe. Southernmost parts of Pflugerville/North Austin closer to the airport or Braker Lane are sketchy.
