O, my God
Seems everybody who responded to this subject never lived outside of the States. What are you talking about?
I live almost 4 months very close to Longhorn Landing apts.
Area is very safe. I get home at 3-30 AM(!) from work and walk for a few minutes.

Yes, it isn't an area for wealthy people, but it's still safe.
It is a student's corner.

Student-targeted apartment complexes like Longhorn Landings probably have way more public intoxication/noise complaint/car breakins than violent crimes.

I lived in two different Riverside apartments as a student back in the late 90s. I never encountered anything more illegal than a college student selling pot from his doorway. At that time, the most dangerous aspect of living on Riverside was the state of the apartments themselves. Lots of dumpy complexes from the 70s that get a bare minimum of renovation work before being turned loose to students for a low monthly rent. You have more options now at least as new complexes keep getting built around there.

The first apartment I lived in burnt down twice after I moved out. Since it faced Riverside RD right over KAOS, I actually saw it burning the first time while driving down Riverside to get to UT. Was an electrical fire, which really didn't surprise me because my lightbulbs kept popping while I was there.

I lived there when I was in college, and we moved out after a year because of the crime and problems.

Safe, well as my post #4 indicated, most of Los Angeles is safer. What do the statistics tell us for 2008?

Murder almost 1 per month.
Rape 1 every 5 days
Robbery 10 robberies per week
Assaults 10 assaults per week
Burglary 5 burglaries per day
Theft 14 thefts per day
Auto Theft 2 per day
Arson one every 20 days

And those are the crimes that were reported. We all know many go unreported.

Where are you getting your statistics? Just curious.

Also, studies have show that you are FAR more likely to get raped and/or murdered by someone you know vs. a total stranger. (creepy, I know)

I'm not entirely sure what that has to do with the above statistics, but I suspect most of the murders & rapes are happening to and by people who know each other. Not because someone just happens to be walking down the street at the wrong time and jumped by a stranger.

I also think it depends on where, in 78741, you happen to be.

Being poor is the worst. That being said, im a broke student residing in the 78741. My last place off Montopolis and Riverside was terrifying. My roommate's car was broken into and we always had shady loitering smokers outside our duplex. I never slept well and moved when my lease ended. Now moving to a newer apartment complex off Oltorf. Still in the 78741 but feels safer due to being on the second floor and having a lot of students in the building. Saftey in numbers? Hopefully.

Looks like some areas haven't changed much then.
