Dear lordy, I love this place!
My decision to move was completely spontaneous, but Austin is a fantastic place. When I arrived (two weeks ago) it seemed kind of rainy and grey and I thought, "this weather sucks...". But the next day it was gorgeous, and sweltering hot. My hotel room had broken AC. I slept in the bathtub... In fact, I turned the water on freezing cold and rinsed off several times during the night. This place is blazin' hot! I should mention I live in Alaska... The weather adjustment was tough. I can't believe I packed jeans- am I crazy? I had to stop by a local store and buy the most rediculous pair of nearly see through (but wonderfully breezy) shorts.
So my trip started off pretty bad, but when I met up with my realitor the next day (who, by the way, is a complete angel), made me fall in love. The guy showed my the best and worst places in the city. I was nearly killed by a car walking across the street- but the driver literally got out of his car and picked me off my feet and said "I'm sorry- pretty lady- are you alright?!". It was shocking behavior- but at least nice bahavior. The people are strangely friendly, I mean, not everyone, but the majority. It's refreshing, because I find my local Anchor town residents somewhat cranky. Anyway, my realitor found me a steal, a great apartment pretty close to the University. He's great...
My new neighbors smoke a lot of pot... The building reeks (reaks?). But I am given $50 dollars off rent- for that specific reason! Ha ha!
I think the city's really nice. I love how green it is, and how big downtown is. Growing up in Anchorage has really made me appreciate bigger cities. I'm simply a city person.
So even my experience had some rough spots; near death experience, being embraced by a male stanger, nearly killing myself because of the heat, and avoiding felons, I had such a fun time in this Texan place. I always thought I hated Texas, but I really don't. I don't think I'll ever make fun of Texans again- Austin locals to be exact. They're great people who live in the coolest city.
I am most definately moving here. Yayyy!

Yeah, I'm pretty weird. The people are awesome! It was a pretty interesting trip. Usually the first time you visit a new place you just explore a lot and don't really meet anybody, but this was not the case. So many freaky (fun!) things happened. This place is different from any other I've visited. It's really chill, everybody's nice.

You go girl! I knew you would love it here. So sorry to hear about your accident but I'm so glad the driver acted in a responsible manner.

Yes, get yourself lots of shorts, you will need them.

Welcome to Austin.

Thanks! I'm excited. I'm so surprised all you need for people to be nice is to flash a smile... I fit right in. One of my best choices in life by far. I'm packing all my stuff up. "Official" moving date is September 10th. Everything is happening so fast ... Anyways, thanks for responding, and answering my questions. Big help!

Wow, you are quite spontaneous! Glad you liked it. Moving in September, you'll only have about 1 more month of summer before the weather becomes really nice. Hopefully you will love it here, but if not, you'll still be richer for the experience. Welcome!

Oh yeah, they could learn something from someone who has to live and breathe around an illegal substance. I would move!
