Want to move to Austin, Tx (Round Rock, Georgetown: apartments, good schools, where to live)

I am a single mother of two wonderful boys ages 6 years old and 11 months. I am trying to move to Ausitn in the Summer of 2010. What are some good areas to live in? I like to shop, listen to music, I need activites for my boys, great school systems, and things to do. Also, could you name some apartments that are nice and affordable.

I am searching now. I have my BA degree in Health and Social Adm and I am getting my MA in psychology. I plan on coming down in April to do some job searching as well as look at apartments.

Really hard to answer without knowing where you will be working, and the terms 'nice' and 'affordable', of course, are inter-related and somewhat subjective. But in general, it sounds like you are looking for an area on the outskirts of Austin or in one of the adjacent suburbs. SW Austin and NW Austin are probably the most common area that would seem to fit your criteria. Are you looking for work in a hospital? The majority of the hospital jobs are near downtown (38th street area) but there are ones all over, including the surrounding towns.

You could look in the Round Rock/Georgetown area, as well - several hospitals right around that dividing line, and affordable housing.

I am thinking a hospital setting or a nursing home. Thanks for your feedback.

I will be looking for a two bedroom apartment. 650-700 is my budget. I am not rich and I do not get any help so I am looking for something that will work out for me and my boys.

I think you can find something in the Round Rock/Pfulgerville/Georgetown area that would meet your needs. There are also some older, but still nice apartments in the Northwest part of Austin that feed into Round Rock Schools. The zip code in that area is 78729.

If i was researching on the internets I'd be looking at options north/northwest of town & also southwest of town....because as was stated above, you don't want to work on the southside & live on the northside or vice versa.

Also, with a 6 y/o... the schools would be important to me, as it is to you. (Note - i said SCHOOLS & not "districts"). In all of the big districts (AISD, RRISD & LISD) there are some fantastic schools & also some average (or even poor) schools. (the smaller districts such as EISD LTISD & DSISD don't have this quality variance)

.....once you identify a dozen or more schools, then you can do further research on greatschools.net.....THEN you can look at apartments that feed into these schools. It's possible to find apartments feeding into crazy good schools, so you should search schools first THEN apts.

But....until you know where you are going to work, I wouldn't make a decision on where to live. Good luck.
