Funky is subjective. These are all different and in different parts of Austin, but all close(except Epoch which is on North Loop):

Cafe Mundi... east side, E 5th to be exact. Borders the rail road tracks. Totally hipster, if you're into that kind of thing, like it seems everyone else is.

Great list above.

Mozart's in Tarrytown (Lake Austin Blvd) is great and pretty close to downtown. Mozart's Coffee Roasters, specialty coffee, Austin, Texas.

Funky is subjective.
Or you can use the Austin funkiness checklist....

1) Nobody wearing dockers, dark socks or a brown belt.
2) Visible duct tape at any location in the rest room, but preferably holding the flush handle in place.
3) Facial piercings on at least one employee and two patrons.
4) At least three laptops in use by patrons, but no ongoing conversation or eye contact between strangers.
5) Interior needs painting.
6) Everything is over priced.
7) Everything tastes great.
8) Service is snappy, quick and friendly, and they call you "bro", even if you're a chick.
9) Old punkish alt rock, such as The Replacements, is playing almost too loud.
10) One gallon glass tip jar (former pickle jar) with catchy phrase hand written next to register.

A score of 7 or higher means you're in a funky place. Five or 6 is apsiring to be funky or is simply having an off day. Below five means you wandered in among salaried tech employees, probably somewhere in Round Rock.

Steve
