My husband will be going without us for a few months probably in Oct. if not sooner so he will have the oportunity to get a feel for everything before he relocates all of us. He was born and partially raised in Texas( back and forth from mom and dads) so he knows kinda what to expect but me..ha I have been in the desert my whole life and have only been to Cali and Arizona.

I lived in Las Vegas from 1999-2001, and have also lived in Austin and Round Rock. Round Rock has grown, but it's pretty "country" around here. I've never gotten much of an intellectual vibe in Round Rock. For me, compared to Vegas, it's verrrry slowwww here. Might be just what you're looking for. They are building a new highschool that looks impressive.

Round Rock has chain restaurants along the highway, and that's about it. You would need to drive into Austin, about a half hour, to do anything "Austin-tatious," as it were.

The heat is worse here. Humidity.

You know, I don't have kids, and if I did, I might have a very different description. Considering what you have been through, you might find this area to be a very nice place to decompress.

Clifton14 -

I lived in LV from 70's to 2006. We moved to Austin in summer of 2006 and have loved every minute of it. Been back to LV once or twice - and reminded that I don't miss it at all.

Here's my rough comparison:

LV = sent children to private schools since Nevada's education system consistently ranks 48th or 49th in quality of education.
Austin = we have our children enrolled in public schools - been very happy with that.

LV = lived in our house in Henderson for 7 years - didn't know any neighbors.
Austin = in 3 years, know most of our neighbors, been to b-day parties, BBQ's. Just had 4th of July block party with 50 people.

LV = Unemployment rate 10.5%ish.
Austin = Unemployment rate 6.5%ish.

LV = only industry - gaming
Austin = diversified economy = state government, university, technology and music

Austin has that congenial and considerate southern hospitality. I know quite a few people that would like to leave LV - but can't because they work in the gaming industry or are underwater with their homes.

If you have any specific questions, you can PM me.

Good luck with the move.

Thanks for all the replys, Im excited about moving and sad..I have a 18 yr old daugter that lives with her boyfriend that will stay in Vegas, but I have 3 others 16,12 and almost 2 that I need to think about and since I know our education system and the city hear has nothing to offer my children I think it would be best. My 16 yr old son will argue of course and tells me he wont go but I guess thats a fight I will have to deal with when the time comes, he plays varsity football and varsity volleyball so going into his senior year at a new highschool will be horrible for him and Im not even sure he would be able to play football since he would be new also there isnt boys vollyball at the schools in Austin and thats his sport that he realy loves.

One thing you might want to know:

Williamson County, Georgetown being the county seat, is more conservative than Travis County in may ways. IIRC, Travis County is the only Democrat county in the state.

Take it as it is!
