I have lived in Las Vegas my entire life and my Husbands has the oportunity to work in Georgetown. One of his salses managers that he realy liked moved there to open up the companys new auto repair shop and he loves it and has been on my husband for months to work with him. I realy want to get out of Vegas and want a better education for my children so is it realy all that great,Im hearing great things about Austin and the surrounding areas.I am hearing that Austin hasnt been hit nearly as hard as us with the economy (we actually closed our own repair shop last year). I am also hearing that the cost of living is better in Austin compared to Vegas...we used to be pretty fair but I think we are close to California now.We just lost our house so I wont be buying any time soon,we will be wanting to rent a house and I have been looking at Round Rock... I would love all info I can get, good or bad!thanks

Can't really compare Austin to Vegas, since I have never been to Vegas but ...

If there was a CSI:Austin, it would be a once a year special.

Round Rock is a pretty nice place to live. If I had a chance to do it over, I would move to Georgetown, though. More beautiful, and it's way less expensive than Austin. Austin, is too expensive for what you get, and there is a lot of hype to it. Georgetown all the way!! The schools there are nice, and a really good choice all around.

I'm very sorry to hear that you lost your house, that has to be devastating. I certainly wish you and your family a better future. Georgetown (GT) and Round Rock (RR) are both great places for people that are family oriented. The proximity to Austin gives you access to many more job opportunities and the nightlife and entertainment that Austin is known for. It does not have the glitz of Las Vegas, but most people here prefer it more authentic, regional and low key.

Violent crime is really low in Austin and even lower in RR & probably Georgetown as well. Theft is high in Austin, but lower in LV and much lower in RR.

There are lots of people living in RR & GT who commute to Austin for work, so there will always be a demand for auto mechanics in the area.

Austin
Daytime population change due to commuting: +127,328 (+19.4%)
Workers who live and work in this city: 307,600 (87.1%)

Las Vegas
Daytime population change due to commuting: +11,117 (+2.3%)
Workers who live and work in this city: 101,780 (48.3%)

Round Rock
Daytime population change due to commuting: +7,468 (+12.2%) <--- A lot of people commute to Dell in RR, and many also commute to Austin for work, so total change is low.
Workers who live and work in this city: 10,396 (32.8%)

Cost of Living
2008 cost of living index in Round Rock: 83.2 (low, U.S. average is 100)
2008 cost of living index in Austin: 87.1 (less than average, U.S. average is 100)
2008 cost of living index in Las Vegas: 93.4 (less than average, U.S. average is 100)

So is Income:
Median household income: Austin $48,966; LV $54,357
Round Rock: $66,792

Home Sales

Median gross rent in 2007: Austin $829; LV $948: RR $953.

Education Levels
For population 25 years and over in Austin
High school or higher: 83.4%
Bachelor's degree or higher: 40.4%
Graduate or professional degree: 14.7%
Unemployed: 4.4%
Mean travel time to work: 22.4 minutes

For population 25 years and over in Las Vegas
High school or higher: 78.5%
Bachelor's degree or higher: 18.2%
Graduate or professional degree: 6.5%
Unemployed: 7.0%
Mean travel time to work: 25.4 minutes

For population 25 years and over in Round Rock
High school or higher: 89.6%
Bachelor's degree or higher: 32.9%
Graduate or professional degree: 9.1%
Unemployed: 3.4%
Mean travel time to work: 26.4 minutes

This one below surprised me! Austin & RR ration being so high.
According to our research there were 1177 registered sex offenders living in Austin, Texas in early 2007.
The ratio of number of residents in Austin to the number of sex offenders is 631 to 1.

According to our research there were 1286 registered sex offenders living in Las Vegas, Nevada in early 2007.
The ratio of number of residents in Las Vegas to the number of sex offenders is 435 to 1.

According to our research there were 76 registered sex offenders living in Round Rock, Texas in early 2007.
The ratio of number of residents in Round Rock to the number of sex offenders is 1276 to 1.

Property Taxes
Austin Median real estate property taxes paid for housing units with mortgages in 2007: $4,002 (2.0%)
LV Median real estate property taxes paid for housing units with mortgages in 2007: $1,853 (0.6%)
Median real estate property taxes paid for housing units with mortgages in 2007: $3,743 (2.3%)

But keep in mind Texas has NO State Income Tax!

As far as the weather, it is warmer and wetter here. I think you will enjoy how green it is in comparison, and it hardly ever snows.

You can find a lot more demographic data to compare here:

My husband will be going without us for a few months probably in Oct. if not sooner so he will have the oportunity to get a feel for everything before he relocates all of us. He was born and partially raised in Texas( back and forth from mom and dads) so he knows kinda what to expect but me..ha I have been in the desert my whole life and have only been to Cali and Arizona.

I lived in Vegas a few years and Austin, is SO much better. The only thing the same is it's hot here too.
Austin is so family friendly and the schools are amazing. I think you would not be sorry, unless you are leaving family there or something.
GOOD LUCK!
