Actaully, this happened to me many years ago and it turned out it was starflight looking for a place to land. It is particularly difficult for helicopters to land 1) at night 2) in an urban area 3) near an accident. The one that needed to land near our house circled for a good while (maybe 10 to 15 minutes) and you had to wonder if an ambulance may have been quicker.

This just happened in my neighborhood a month ago. They were looking for a lost 4 year old boy. I've lived here for 12 years and never saw a helicopter search before. It is scary and your imagination can definitely run away with it. If you call the local police, they'll tell you who they were looking for and if they were found.

I saw a sign on the Capitol Of Texas Highway (what a mouthfull!) yesterday about a missing elderly person. Maybe it was for that.

We had police helicopters searching late at night frequently when we lived in Allandale. There was never anything in the paper the next day, so who knows. The only one I knew more about was when they were looking for bank robbers. It was quite exciting, a SWAT team surrounding a house on Shoal Creek Blvd, but the suspects weren't there.

It could have been anything. When I lived in Denver and Houston those helicopters were almost a daily occurance to see. Here, In the 4 yrs. I've been here, I've only seen one helicopter fly over at night with a spotlight. So, going from hearing and seeing them daily to once in 4 yrs. I feel pretty darned comfy with that. I think actually the one time I saw the helicopter, it was reported the next day that they were tracking a speeder.

Who is it and what are they looking for?
Was it this guy? See the film footage of helicopter with infrared image tracking the guy through the woods.

I have never experienced that in 32 years of living in Austin, but used to see them all the time in LA.

That's pretty impressive if he can run from S. Congress all the way to Hutto with a chopper chasing him.

Just don't shine the spotlight on your truck back at the helicopter. I just read the other day about a rancher who did that to a military copter because they kept scaring his cows, and he got a huge fine for doing so.
