Actually, he kept his personal opinions out of it to such an extent that on the exceedingly rare occasions when he DID express an opinion, it made an impression because it was so remarkable, not "every day". On the occasion you mention, it made such an impression, for that reason, that it was taken notice of by a President, who took it seriously.

That was, of course, when there was a distinct difference between "news" and "editorial", the newspapers contained both, separately, and it was very clearly designated which was which, and never the twain shall meet, to the point that when I was much younger, I thought there was an actual law against putting forth editorial as news.

Wouldn't be bad at all if it were the same today.

Just like older newspapers or newsweekly's like Time.....more intelligent AND objective in those days..actually, the extreme left and right slantings have dumbed down news on all fronts, including the web....reality is always more encompassing and centrist, while extremism is not only more simplistic, but more egocentric, in that it just allows people to air their grievances rather than see reality and things for what they are.....

He was famously told by a UT Professor, when he tried out for some sort of broadcasting gig, that he'd never make it in Broadcasting.

What a solid personality he was, with integrity. Who will replace people like him?
