I think the first part is BS. A degree from UT is about the same value in Austin as a degree in the same field from A&M, Rice, SMU, etc..

Maybe if the hiring manager is a hard-core Longhorn it might make a tiny difference. But the hiring managers in any decent sized company are from all over. They will hire the best candidate, and that doesn't mean UT and Ivy automatically win.

Now that's real BS! HR look at transcripts! If you are talking about ranking(by IT HR), UTCS (undergrad program) is generally rated below Rice, above A&M and far above SMU.

I call BS on this. I have hired and work with other managers that don't care where the degree is from, we really test your knowledge. We have people from all the top colleges and some acc graduates too.

And yes I work in the real world. We are in business not a fraternity.

Hmmm....I guess the fact that I have worked in Austin for three software companies since 1985 and have personally hired dozens of people doesn't count? One of these companies is a > $1B software company. I have even recruited on campus at both A&M and UT - hired from both schools.

Yeah, for the most part, I didn't think IT people are cool enough to join a fraternity...

The name on your college diploma is only one aspect of a job interview no matter what field you are in. U Georgia, U Florida, FSU, U Tenn., Texas-- they are all about the same. Most people get jobs through networking and their personality.. unless they are getting hired by some elitist who thinks Univ. of Texas is equal to Harvard....
