Title pretty much says it all - I don't have insurance and I need a dentist for what may be a root canal. My husband lost his job in January and we are left without insurance and paying several thousand dollars would seriously do us in. We can pay hundreds, just not thousands! Any suggestions on where to go or what to do? Does anyone have experience with Dorsey Dental Discount?

Try GoDental in Pflugerville (in front of the Super Walmart). They are really nice. Don't know what they charge for a root canal, but I believe they can work out payment arrangements.

Default Try the hospital

Root canal - painful (I empathesize). For emergency dental treatment, contact the hospital they have dentists. In your financial situation, you can ask for the paperwork to apply for charitable funding (basicly it will pay your expenses), hospitals don't come out and tell you this, you have to ask. The hospital won't turn you away.
Good luck.

I have been to Shoal Creek dental w/o insurance, and they give a bit of a discount. They are really good, but I would call and get price quotes first. good luck!

UT San Antonio has a dental school - obvioulsy it's a bit of a drive, but it might be worth looking into if you can services at a significantly reduced fee.

How to become a patient, The University of Texas Health Science Center - Dental School

I would say the dental school is the best bet...ER could turn into a bad thing if paperwork is screwed up.....could still come at you for the money, while it is cut and dried at the school......
Schools charge about 1/3 what you would pay an average dentist, and they do all procedures.....and the teacher is watching the whole time, grading them.....better than not having it done at all.....

And thanks to the mod for not deleting this this time!

Not necessarily recommending this, but I've known people who did it... and just so you know all the options... dental care across the border at english-speaking dentists can run 40-70% less than the cost here in the US. Do some googling to find out more, or find where to contact people who have done this.

More like 70% than 30%.....true, who knows if equipment is sterilized or what you do if they screw it up...however, I hear they mostly do as good a job as the US docs....though the equipment is usually a bit older, not ancient, just older, but quite functional.........

I personally would do it...I had a 7 thousand quote for a crown, root canal, and other work recently...still mulling over the mexico thing, but I think I might do it....

Lots of people go to Mexico for dental work. People across from my sister in Marble falls have been going for 20+ years. Many RV's go across the border for dental, glasses and RX's.

Do a search for Jim Twamley and Mexican Dental for a several part series he did.
