I'm finally in Austin looking at houses and neighborhoods. As expected, I really liked Steiner Ranch but I was also surprised to find that I liked the Toll Brothers houses at the Ridge at Alta Vista. Unfortunately, I don't know much about that community. Can anyone fill me in?

I'm planning to move from New York with my husband and 1 year old son, so I really want a family friendly area with good schools. Since we don't know anyone in the area, I really liked the social aspects and the structured activities that are offered at Steiner Ranch and want to find something like that. Also, what would the commute be like from Alta Vista to downtown? Better or worse than Steiner?

Any other info you can think of would be great!

Thanks

Cool Ridge at Alta Vista is Better than Steiner

Ridge at Alta Vista is a smaller community than Steiner. Steiner is too big, has several communities within, 3 schools (all exemplary BTW), 3 community pools which I understand is always crowded. Taxe rates are higher in Steiner. Ridge at Alta Vista only has 300+ homes, gated community, 1 community pool, lower tax rate in Lakeway. Commute to downtown approx 20-25 mins by going FM 620 to 71 to Bee Caves Road, then thru Barton Springs Rd.; From Steiner, probably 20 mins. FM 620 to 2222, then Mopac South.

I used to live in Long Island and glad to be outta there!

That's a pretty good summary right there. I think you'll like the views at Alta Vista as well. There as also good appreciation in that area and I think you'll get more home for the money. If it matters The Ridge is gated where as Steiner is not. Several good quality builders in this area as well.

Default Big Thumbs up to the Ridge

I just purchased a custom home from Toll Brothers @ the Ridge and I have to say that I am very satisfied. Overall the Toll Brothers experience was not as factory as I thought it would be. The additional features you can purchase really provide you with the ability to make your house unique. Also, the neighborhood does have the mountainous feel and is very close to the new shopping mall.. Overall the experience has been a pleasure and I cannot wait for the build to finalize next Summer.. Also much credit should go to the sales staff Jerry and Candie are easy to work with and correspond frequently via email. Good luck shopping...

PS - I don't miss the weather in New England !

Actually, there are several gated areas in Steiner, including River Heights Overlook (Drees and Taylor Woodrow builders) and then the entire UT Golf Club side is behind a manned guard gate....

I'm considering Ridge at Alta Vista... I realize that the thread is 5 or so years old. Have things changed, or are you all still happy being there?

I have two kids under 4, and would like to be in a community with a number of similarly aged kids -- will I find them there?

There are a number of families with children of that age. It's wonderful community with a lot of active parents, babysitters and playmates!

If you are still looking at Alta Vista, we have lived there for 3 years and love it. Great family community.
