Are single houses doing better than condos, etc?

We don't know what area(s) we would like to live in just yet, but we will be making a trip in October for a 3-day weekend to do some looking around. I have friends that live in east Austin so I have been looking at condos/lofts in that area. We would like to live downtown, although I don't think we will end up there because it is more than likely too expensive. Wherever we end up, we want to be within walking/biking distance to our everyday needs and other amenities such as cafes, restaurants, shopping.

Thanks
What's your price range? That will help people narrow down suggestions.

atxcio made some great points about general rules of thumb if considering condos.

I'm thinking our price range will be $150k-200k... but it's difficult to say right now since neither of us have even applied for jobs anywhere yet, so we (obviously) don't know what our salaries will be.

I've already found quite a few properties east, south, and west of downtown. Some are fixer uppers, some are brand new.

You shouldnt have a problem if your not looking to be downtown. South and North have condos in your price range, new and resales.

Even downtown, the Milago and Shore buildings now have some listings at around $190K for a practically new condo.

I have seen those available properties as well, but they are tiny at around 600 s.f. or less. It seems you can get about 900 s.f. for the same price just outside of downtown.

Over 1200 sqft new construction within a 15 min drive to downtown with traffic should be a good criteria for your search.

No thanks - don't want to be that dependent on the car.
